Station 12: Jesus Cares for His Mother

John 19:25-27 – 25 But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

Although many of the 12 disciples seem to have deserted Jesus at this point in the story, each of the 4 gospels highlights the women of faith who stood by Jesus side right until the end. The Gospel of John indicates that Mary, Jesus’ mother, is one of those women. Jesus, now minutes to a couple hours away from death, wanted to ensure that his mother was cared for, so he entrusts her to his good friend John.First, Jesus spoke to the women as they walked to the cross. Then he cried out, “Father forgive them”. He then extended salvation to the criminal. Now he is watching out for his mother. Up until the end, Jesus is embodying the second half of the great commandment: love your neighbour as yourself.

What would it look like for you to love your neighbour? Who can you care for and show the love of Jesus to?
